Event Description

Join us in welcoming local author, Michael Prasad, as he shares his picture book, Rusty the Emergency Management Cat.

Rusty the Emergency Management Cat is an illustrated children's book describing a fictional cat who wants to become an Emergency Manager. Rusty enjoys his home and his life as an indoor cat. But when a severe storm forces his family to evacuate to a shelter, Rusty learns how to help keep his family safe. Basics of overall Emergency Management are introduced to kids and their parents. This book covers the 'before', 'during', and 'after' something bad happens, as compared to just the emergency response timeframe of 'during'. Also covered in the book are elements of belonging, kindness, and recognition of people with disabilities and access/functional needs. And at the end, there is information from the U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) on how to prepare your pets for disasters.

Michael Prasad is a Certified Emergency Manager and wrote this book with the intention of informing children and their families about how to keep safe in the case of an emergency.
